  • Thanks for all the responses. That day every ICE car with air conditioning was using it, believe me, illegal or not (and surely not - that would be absurd!) We didn't choose to be held up for such a long time. Does anyone know why it is necessary to close a motorway for 12 hours following a fatality? There was no diesel spill to clear up.
Requires a full-blown investigation of the cause of the crash/death

I was wondering if my estimate of efficiency was reasonable, so if a petrol car produces leccy at 10% efficiency, then over an hour (if consuming 1kW), it would need to burn 10kWh of petrol. A gallon (imp) of petrol has about 42kWh of energy in it, so that's around a quarter of a gallon per hour, which I thought sounded high,
My wife's Fiesta has a fuel guessometer showing "instant mpg".  When stopped at traffic lights, and the auto-stop-start has not activated, the "instant mpg" shows either 0.1 gal/hour or 0.2 gal/hour.  Your quarter of a gallon per hour seems reasonable against that.

Lot of investigation over what caused the crash.

AC usage is minimal. Heating the car in extremely cold conditions even with a heat pump uses a lot though. Propelling the wheels uses the most KWs.
EVs are much nicer to drive, if you can charge at home then get one.
If you can’t charge at home and have a decent budget then get a Tesla and make use of the super charger network. If you normal mileage you probably only need to charge once a week anyway.
People are making a bigger issue out of this than is necessary.
    I do 15k a year in a 30kw leaf without issues.

Yes, I realise that a fatality has to be comprehensively investigated, but almost 12 hours? The northbound M5 was closed at Junction 27 from 5.35 am to 4.50 pm. I lived in the US for a number of years, and holds up on a Freeway following a fatality were no where near as long as that. They were properly investigated too.
  • I think EV's are still at a point where it is very much down to an individuals habits as to if they make sense or not. It wont be too long before they do for everyone but there are still groups that do not.

I drive 400 miles each way about 6 times a year to visit family, we take 2 dogs and 2 children with us so public transport isn't an option due to the dogs. We do the drive usually with a single 20 minute break halfway. This would not be possible with an EV (especially once you add in a fully loaded car with a full roof box too killing the range).

As soon as I am able to do this journey in the same way I will be converting.

400 miles with a 20 min stop halfway, is entirely doable with an EV. But your size and roofbox issues would probably require a more expensive BEV, such as a long range Tesla Model Y. If you're willing to perhaps stop twice for 15-20 mins, then other options would become available.
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

I could do that with my EV, taking advantage of the 20 minute stop for a splash-and-dash top up charge.
There are many other EV's with a similar range available.

Looks like you can convert sooner rather than later

I feel sorry for the driver and passengers too. What’s the rush? An extra half hour break would be much welcome I would have thought.
