A while back, I paid the local gas distributors (not my gas company) over £1000 to move my meter.  I never expected it to be free.
They did a lot of work for that money, digging up the drive, re-doing the pipes, fitting the meter and then making good the drive.
It was all rather expensive, but I didn't think it unfair.  After all, it was me who needed the meter moved, not the gas company.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

You could always wait and see if they ever replace/reline the gas mains, they tend to move meters outside for free then.
Or, get a nice shiny hygienic smart meter.
Or box in the unhygienic meter you have, but not a fixed box, meter readers will need to see it and you need to be able to get to the ECV

Next door neighbour had his gas meter for free after I (inadvertently) got his supply cut off.
Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • I would point out that is was the 6th phone call where an agent said there will be additional charges by the infrastructure provider (Cadent). The issue is one of transparency as the agents do not want to give you the bad news until directly asked and even then they do not give you any idea what those charges are. It is scandalous, asis the service provided by these energy companies but that is a different topic altogether!!!
  • I think the answer to this was nailed quite some time back in the thread. Your issue with your current meter is that  it's rusty, and you feel this is unhygienic to have in a kitchen. You can have that rusty meter replaced with a brand new smart one free of charge - so why not simply do that if you're not happy with the amount being charged for the move? Surely that solves the entire issue?
