GiffGaff on iPhone - some online apps not working on data

My son has an iPhone (couple of years old) and is using a GiffGaff sim.
At home, connecting to Wi-Fi everything works well.
Away from home he can call, text and his location app works as I can see his whereabouts when I’m at home. However, Google, AppStore, and online games do not work.
I have put his SIM card in my phone and everything works so it would appear to be his phone. GiffGaff are unable to help me any more as it would appear their sim is working.
I don’t understand how his location app works but google etc doesn’t - if his phone was locked to another network, he wouldn’t be able to use it at all would he?
any suggestions as to other settings etc to check? I don’t think it’s worth paying a repair shop to look at it as it’s 2 years old already, I just wanted it to last another year before he can have my old phone.
TIA

Settings —> Mobile Data
Make sure that is turned on
Then check mobile data settings - GiffGaff community site will tell you what those settings should be.I am an Independent Financial Adviser. I have a Giffgaff phone that often doesn't switch to using mobile data when away from home. I've not found any settings that changes this, but switching the phone off and then on again fixes the problem.0

I did have an issue with an app that didn't work properly when I was on Sky mobile (they use o2 network like GiffGaff). I presumed it was that app that didn't like data but did wifi, but I'm on the EE network now and it works fine.0
