Best value moving boxes

We are due to move soon and have looked into boxes for packing. Boxes are a lot more expensive than I thought! Does anyone have tips on where to get good value boxes?

In the short term; you can buy boxes from about £1 each from Amazon.

In the longer term, you can occasionally find people selling plastic crates for about £6 each in bulk, which you can presumably sell on afterwards for your £6 back.

Of course, you may be able to find some free boxes in your local community pages, shops etc.

I got good ones from Wilkos, which sadly is no use the OP now. You can pack in whatever you can get hold of but standardised boxes that stack and fit neatly will make things easier, and clear load limits will give piece of mind. If you are going to need packing tape buy or borrow a tape dispenser for it, it will be well worth it in the time is saves you.

Our local Freegle has them offered for free regularly along with packing material.  One of my standard things though is to get the "banana boxes" from Lidl etc.  Nice and sturdy and then have handles and the can be stacked.  perfect for packing up books or china or dvds etc etc.  When we moved I would pick up 2 or 3 a couple of times a week from any shop I went in to and then would pack and stack.  Normally would have 1 for charity shop recycling and another for us to take on the move.  First would go in the car for drop off and the second would be stacked.  And repeat.

oh just to add lots of fruit sections at supermarkets have bubble wrap available too.  the shops have to bin/recycle it so are normally completely happy with you taking it away.

This won't necessarily work for everyone, but I asked around at work, some colleagues happened to have moved themselves recently and were more than happy to pass their used boxes on to me. Not every box was usable, but we had enough for our move.

I had hundreds of books when I downsized, even after sorting them out and giving many away.  I decided to buy 'new' boxes so I could stack them.

I bought them from www.kitepackaging.co.uk -  double bunded and sturdy, they survived being moved three times.

Definitely freecycle or whatever your local free website etc. we have next door as well. We put an advert on and got lots for free. My aunt got some on Amazon and they were very thin and not like the ones from real moving firms.

If you're using a removal firm, they'll often supply them. STRONGLY recommend getting them to pack too - then you don't have to worry about any packaging/boxes/tape/bubble wrap, etc.

  • I use these: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/dundergubbe-moving-box-brown-10477049/ and https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/dundergubbe-moving-box-brown-40534562/

They don’t need any taping, either, they just fold down and become a box. Hold up to 30kg. The prices have crept up, unfortunately, but I’d still buy these over the other offerings (eg. StorePAK, 5 for £30, no thanks). Ikea also do cheap enough storage bags, for the soft stuff, which could be used after the event, for under bed storage and similar.

    Alternatively, freebies from shops.
