Can I write any of my gas arears off?

Hello, I've come here in the hope you could offer me some advice with no judging....
I am nearly £7000 in arears with my gas bill with Eon NEXT.  It's a very long story, moved into house and presumed I was paying duel fuel to what was then Bulb (a lot of money a month) but turns out I wasn't.
This stems from October 2016.  Am I able to write nay of this off?

Please no judging, I am simply asking if I can write any of it off?  Thanks in advance :)

If they have tried to bill you for it, including anything to "the occupier" etc, it is unlikely that the rules provide for automatically writing any of it off.

If they haven't tried at all, you might be covered by back billing.

Were you billed for the gas usage and you did not pay the bills, or was there some issue with meter reads, estimated usage etc? If you were not billed for the usage then back billing stops them charging you for usage more than 12 months ago (with some caveats) if you were billed, but you did not pay then you will still need to pay the bills.

Has any enforcement action been commenced against you, CCJ?

No, they wanted to fit a prepayment meter but I wouldn't be able to afford to run one.  they have now issued a letter threatening a default.  I didn't receive bills for a long time and the usage would of been estimated as I didn't send them any meter readings.

If you have not paid then you are in default, so that would be correct. Not letting them fit a prepayment meter or agreeing a repayment plan will only make things worse.

Have you established why you did not receive the bills, were you registered with them? Do you have a smart meter? Are the readings used for the most recent bill now current, with total billing based on actual meter reads? When did they first contact you about the debt and the need to bring your account up to date? Are your current payments covering your usage, or are you going further into debt?

As above, you are going to need to be a lot more specific in your information to get any valid replies.
Perhaps talk us through step-by-step what happened and when, going back to when you first moved in, what bill you had when, etc,

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Can you afford to pay for what you are using now?
There are funds that can help clear historic debts, but not ongoing costs (So they tend not to help if the problem will continue).

If not Bulb -  who were you paying ?  and when did that payment stop ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

You need to give us a breakdown of the events that happened.

If you moved into a new house, you should have contacted the energy supplier that was currently supplying the property and asked to set up an account and gone from there.

Why did you presume you were paying bulb? If you were paying nobody why didnt you put the money away for when they did bill you?

Based on 2016 to 2023 your gas bill would be £1000 a year roughly. Check the readings they have billed against seem right to you and that your usage is correct.

I highly doubt you will be able to write it off.
