Insuring my 20 year old daughter on my car but she's only home to use it sometimes when not at uni

My daughter is away at uni and sometimes uses my car when she's home.  In previous years I have put her as a named driver on my car for the whole year.  I'm wondering if theres a better option as she is only home the odd weekend here and there and sometimes to visit during the holidays  and Im wondering if theres an alternative option to insure her when she's home only - Any ideas appreciated seems mad paying for the whole year when's she's not here much.

  • How much does it actually cost you to have her as a named driver on your car?

You can get short term insurance, but for the number of days she'd be driving for it may not be cheaper.

  • Does she significantly increase the premium?  If not, just put her on there for the year.

You can add her temporarily to your own policy when she actually needs to drive. There may well be admin fees each time you make the change (unless you can find a policy that will let you do it online for free) but it could work out cheaper if it really is just a few times a year and it would cost a lot just to put her on all the time.

If it's fairly regular use and/or she doesn't add much to the premium then you are probably better just leaving her on all year.

Unless you can make amendments to your policy without cost to yourself it is usually just as cheap to leave her insured all year round.  Two things spring to mind

    1.  it might happen that you need her to drive in an emergency situation and it might be out of hours and you are not able to contact the insurer to get her put on your insurance
    2. I used to add and subtract my daughter to my insurance many years ago when she was a student:  one year she visited home when we were away on holiday and used my car, not realising that she was not insured. Luckily nothing happened, but after that I left her on the policy fulltime, it did not cost any extra
