issues adding gmail to mail app on iphone - "cannot get mail - gmail is currently unavailable"

I'm trying to add my daughter's gmail account to the mail app on her iphone 8. But after adding everything and authorising it, I just get the "cannot get mail - gmail is currently unavailable" error message.

I've tried uninstalling the mail app, deleteing and adding her gmail details, and even resetting the network settings.. I even tried turning it off and on again -- but just get the same error.

I've then tried searching for similar issues online but found nothing. I'm convinced it must be some box that isn't ticked or related to the google family security stuff, but I can't figure out what I need to do to resolve it.

Has anyone had similar issues? Can you advise how to fix it?

Do you have two factor authentication set up on your Gmail account?

If so, that's probably what the issue is and you'll need to use an app password:

Rather than using an app you can access gmail through any web browser.

We don't have two step authentication set up...

This is true. But in this instance, we want to set it up through the Mail app on her phone. Mine works flawlessly on my iphone, so I'm not sure why it doesn't on hers...

Yep. I’ve done everything I should. Exactly the same way I set mine up on my phone - which works. I’m convinced this is something to do with google parental controls but I don’t know if I'm right, or what the problem is if I am…

I've just found out that it sends emails without problem, but just won't receive any at all. Does that offer any insight into what the problem might be?
