Hello,
I hope someone can help-
I have solar PV and I am currently on deemed FIT payments, I have been for about 6 years now. I have just got an EV and I have heard of special EV tariffs but I am not sure if they will work for me for the following reasons;
I have been told Economy 7 rates don't work for me as I use a lot more energy during the day (this was from my energy provider who don't know I have solar as they don't handle my FIT payments - at least they have never mentioned it. SO even though I have an Economy 7 meter- I have been put on standard rates. I am struggling to see how a very low EV night rate would help....

Do I need to get a battery? I heard they won't charge the EV anyway so I am sceptical and the powerwall costs about 10K and I am unclear if the FIT exports will carry on or stop I get a battery.

what would be be most cost efficient please?

    What do you want a battery for?  If you already use more energy during the day, which is when solar is generating, how would it help?

    If you have an E7 meter, you will have separate registers for day- and night-rate consumption.
    How much of each have you used in the past year? Check your meter readings.
    If you are now adding an EV, how many miles a year do you expect to drive and how much of that will you charge at home?

    You should be looking at EV specific tariffs not E7. What EV do you have? What EV charge point are you using? If your EV or charge point are compatible then intelligent Octopus is worth looking at otherwise something iike Octopus Go or E-on Next Next Drive.

    I do have an economy 7 meter but on joining octopus approx 2 years ago, I was advised being billed on a standard rate (ignoring the economy 7 split) results in lower bills for me and I did this happily. I checked a number of times over the last 2 years and this remained the case.
    I expect to drive about 20000 miles per year and charge about 1/2 of that at home.

    Octopus Intelligent would be my tariff of choice in your situation.

    That's all well and good but doesn't answer my question.

    So, somewhere between 2500 and 3300kWh/yr of home charging. Much of that could be at night rates.
    Once you've told us how much electricity you currently use at each rate, we can give you some options and estimates of costs.

    I expect you to be correct, but let's get some numbers.
