CORC roofer

Options
Hi. Looking to have brand new roof on semi detached and a small flat root re-done. Been quoted £7k from a CORC roofer. Does this price seem reasonable? And is there any benefit in going with a CORC member - looks like this is just a trade body?
Its s lot of money and ive had a cowboy builder before so sny advice greatly appreciated.

Presumably, they are removing the old tiles, batten, and felt. Putting a new breathable membrane down, new battens and reusing as many of the original tiles as possible. Replacing all the old tiles with new would bump the cost up considerably.

    Yup - that is cheap.
  • Yes. Remove old tiles, new membrane and new tiles. If that is cheap, what would average cost be?

Any views on benefits of being CORC registered?

Have you looked at their website?  It's nit exactly comprehensive but when you say 'just a trade body', it's a trade body that insists its members have been operating for 2 years before joining, are able to offer you a 10 year insurance backed guarantee on new work and operate a complaints service which is presumably some kind of mediation between you if things do go wrong.

I suspect that CORCs reason for existing is to provide consumers with some reassurance - the government doesn't care if building contractors are licensed or not so roofers join because they want to show professionalism.

If you have the choice of a roofer that is a
member or one that is not, then this is providing some prior due diligence for you and shows that your roofer cares about you and the quality of their work.  I'd be pleased about that.

Honestly no idea - sorry. I can only assume it's reasonable for that size of roof, but I can't recall the last time I heard of a re-roofing for that sort of sum. And a small flat roof too!
What are your neighb's roofs like? If in a similarly poor condition (I assume yours is, or else you wouldn't bother?), do you think they'd also be interested? Unless you are separated by parapets, it would also most likely be an easier and neater job, and you should also both save a bit each. I'd bite yer arm off.
