Lost service book

Hi MSE community

Purchased a second hand car from a ‘reputable’ dealer, Evans Halshaw. I initially called them before making the purchase as I wanted to be sure the car had full service history. They assured me it did, they said they were looking at the logbook and its been stamped 4 times etc.

Anyway, I drove down a few days later, took the car for a test drive and everything seemed fine. I proceeded to purchase the car and have no complaints with the actual car. However, it dawned on me a few days after, they never showed me the service book and I have called on 2 occasions asking for it to be posted (the dealer is some distance away) but nothing has been received still.

I am now at the point where I am worried there is no service book or they have lost it. What are my options on this? I wanted to call up and speak with the manager but not sure how ‘hard’ to go. My main concern is how having no service book will impact the sell on value. Also annoyed that they potentially lied to me as that leaves a bitter taste (although appreciate its not a reputable occupation at the best of time).

Thanks

Think you need to be speaking to the management. After all you’ve bought the car having been told about the cars service history so either they’ve got evidence or they haven’t.
  • If you believe it should have a main dealer service history I'd be very surprised  if they don't have electronic records of this. Even if the physical service book has been lost they should be able to re-create  it from electronic records

I bought my car in November with full service history. The book is totally empty but they provided a full computer printout of the service history

Most manufacturers moved away from physical service books and stamps and it is all online now. It could well have been they were looking at that.

What make of car and year is it and people may be able to tell you if they have a service book for theirs.

Either way, a print out from the online system should suffice. If it was main dealer serviced you should be able to go with your V5 as proof of ownership to your local main dealer and get them to print it out.

Is that the same V5 that has, in big bold letters, highlighted in red, "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP"?

    That's the one. :)

If it has your name & address on it they will release service information to you.
It doesn't matter whether you actually own it or it is just registered to you.

It is rather difficult to prove ownership. Even the bill of sale proves nothing, as you could have gifted it to someone.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • Just posting as an update. Service book was posted after a few more weeks of chasing, just seems they were being slack. Only thing thats bothering me is that the stamps are all there but no back up paperwork, do I need to chill out and are the stamps enough as FSH? All services have been done at a Peugeot dealership garage so suspect they would have online records in any event.

The paperwork would contain the personal details of the previous owner, I certainly did not give them to the dealer when I traded my car in.  The stamps in the book are sufficient and can be verified if necessary.  The MyPeugeot app may contain the service details - have you tried it ?

Thanks. Tried the app but says you have to book in a service with them to obtain it!
