Anyone use Zoom free version. Recording comes out low resolution.

Options
Im running Windows 10 and using the free version so saving the recordings to my computer.

If i click on New Meeting and it's just me i press record, when i play it back it comes out good in a HD resolution. But if someone else joins the meeting and i just want to record myself not the other person, when I play it back it comes out in low resolution.

I'm normally good at solving problems like this but this one has totally got me confused.

by default, Zoom records the video at a low quality, low resolution 640 x 360 pixel video file, with both video/audio streams baked into one file.

The better solution is not to use Zoom for that, but use some screen capture software, something like OBS or I believe Windows 10 has an app by default.

That can't be totally true because it records definitely at 720p when it's just me no one else in zoom. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you are saying?

Just thinking are you saying if you are in a meeting then it will only record 640x360 but if its just you it will record 720p

Here you go, from the horse's mouth:
https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/4409490756749-Resolution-of-recorded-video - "2 or more participants, Video turned ON, Camera HD not enabled, recording resolution 640x360".

You only get the 720p if the cameras have HD enabled and Participant view in full screen, otherwise its your default low resolution.

If you want the better quality recording as I've already alluded to, don't use Zoom's feature for that - use a screen recorder.

Well going by what Zoom has said I should indeed be getting HD when a second person is in the meeting, Which I'm not. I haven't got control on what I can use it has to be Zoom.

    Thanks for the link.

What you should get and what you do get are two entirely different things.
Like most web conferencing software the devil will be in the detail of the connection so if the other party has a poor connection and it looks like a horiible mushy mess at your end, you won't get HD out of that.

Wi-Fi is all very well and good but realistically the better picture quality needs a wired connection, but you're not going to have any control over that at the other end of the link.

I disagree with the first bit. If HD is turned on then the file will be in HD (resolution) . I'd agree if you talked about quality instead.

If there are connection issues Zoom will lower the frame rate first of all. If connection issues continue then artifacts will appear as Zoom reduces the quality of the picture. If this still doesn't work then the picture will freeze or go black.

(Quality is not the same as resolution. eg. You could reduce the number of shades of blue while maintaining the resolution.)
