What size patio would you go for?

We currently have a conservatory base and a patio that comes almost out 4m. Base and patio going soon but what size would you replace it with?

Depends on what you want it for.  Outdoor eating area with bbq?  Hot tub and sun loungers?  Children's play area??  Will there be raised box planters edging it? Or???

We are more than happy with a patio the width of the house but only 2 metres deep.  We LOVE the shade it provides from noon every day.  Our 'entertaining/eating' area is decking at the other end of the garden.

Tha would be perfect but we have a neighbour with a very large Oak with a TPO on it so it would be difficult to achieve this. Garden is only 11m deep.

My patio is some 10m wide and 3.5m deep. Some days, I feel it could do with being quite a bit bigger, but I certainly wouldn't go any smaller.
2m would be just about the right size for a path though :)

I had a 2m deep space between the back of the house and a garden wall. If you want to seat up to 6 people, I really don't think that 2m will be deep enough once you have got chairs around a table and need to allow enough space for people to pull the chairs out and get into/out of them. Believe me, I desperately wanted it to fit but it was too tight for comfort. I agree that 3 - 3.5m would be minimum.

Choose your furniture, see what fits.

I know it's traditional to go with the width of the house but really you want to comfortably fit the things that are important to you.

We have around 4m x 4m for a sofa and two armchairs.  We also have a triangular patio, about half the size for a dining table that never gets used.   Our actual dining table is too close to bother eating outside.

Neither area is immediately next to the house.

If you want something to be really successful, you design it as a whole - ie. the whole garden, even if you do it in chunks.

Thanks - because it’s quite a small garden the 3m depth looks good when we plan it out with the current 4m patio. Just awkward to position furniture when the are 2 larges steps into house and old conservatory base, and the log store.

We’re going to look at moving the shed and shed base next summer so this will be a very ongoing task!

Patio this year, next door’s oak tree next month (I’m paying to have it cut at great expense, but it benefits me tbf).
