Land Rover Discovery 2 Td5 | eBay

- Egr delete with silicone hoses all round
- Updated maf sensor
Td5 Inside Stage 2 Remap (225 bhp)
Stage 2 remap with hard cut limiter
3 amigo lights ( WHAT ARE THESE ??)come and go as they please

Hi, thinking of buying this, but surely removing the EGR valve is an MOT failure, isnt it. What is the purpose of removal. Doesnt it increase fuel consumption? Is it lke a DPF thing an clogs up (hence removal). Any advice appreciated

They remap to stop EGR, this is not a MOT failure in itself (although it may become one in a year or two), but it may also lead to increased emissions which can cause an MOT failure. People do it because it gives them slightly  more power and can slightly improve throttle response, especially in poorly maintained engines. It has also been remapped to increase power, that means more stress on the engine, components, transmission and gearbox, meaning those components are much more likely to fail prematurely.

The three amigo lights relate to ABS / traction control / hill decent control lights, they indicate anything from an intermittent issue with an ABS sensor to a complete failure of the ABS and/or traction control system.

The advert also mentions an oil leak, issues with the chassis (which has had to be welded), even if I were in the market for a modified off road vehicle, this would not be one I would consider.

Removing the EGR can make it go a bit better. It is an MOT fail under section 8.2.2.1 if they can see it has been removed. On a td5 there is an engine cover to hide it, and unless they are jobsworths, they won't make the effort to look under it.

The three amigos are the ABS TC & Hill descent lights. If they are on it fails the MOT.  There is a list of things that can set them off as long as your arm, and with an intermittent fault it is a lot of trouble to find..

Remember it is a LandRover. Never buy a LandRover as your only vehicle as you need something reliable to collect the parts for a LandRover- they break all the time- I've had 4 and there was always something broken on them, but being older ones without all the electronics at least they kept going and could be mended with hammers and a 6 foot scaffold pole on the cracker bar.

I'd be a bit suspicious of the advert though, notice there are no pictures of underneath or under the bonnet!
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

EGR valves can clog up and fail like the DPF and a bodge is to blank it off and / or map it out. So whilst it can often be for "performance" reasons, often it is a work around of a failure.

The remap will of course have to be declared to the insurer (as would the other modifications) which would likely increase the insurance price.

Your link appears to be to a different ebay advert to the description. This one doesn't say it is a stage 2 remap (which would require extensive inlet and exhaust modifications).

There is a train of thought that if you want a modded vehicle, mod it yourself.

As you are finding out, you don't really know what someone else has done, whatever they did do, did they do it right and if not did they fudge over the problems they caused when they did it.

I have mildly modded a few Discoveries including a TD5 and they can usually take a a bit of a lift and a few choice extras, but done badly and you can strain out the drivetrain by sending propshafts as silly angles and mess with the steering and axle angles.

Blanking/Mapping out the EGR is a pretty common thing of a diesel engine this old.
Over the years the valve normally clogs with soot and oily vapour from the crankcase breather and gums up the valve, inlet manifold and intake ports.

A MOT tester can't take things apart to look for issues like a blanked EGR, but they might notice if the valve has been deleted altogether as they now tend to look into things like this a bit more deeply than they did a few years ago.

Strangely, the EGR blank/delete would make the engine less smoky if the valve so clogged or failed.
More often than not when a EGR valve fails from clogging it fails open which allows exhaust gas to recirculate when it shouldn't, like an open throttle.
This unwanted exhaust gas replaces air in the combustion which then causes a rich combustion( it's fuelling for air that isn't there) and lots of soot and smoke at the exhaust.

I wouldn't buy this on the advert alone, I would be very weary of the rear chassis legs as most of the other likely problems could be sorted fairly easy if you're in the know. I'd want it on a ramp first to see the extent of the damage/repairs.

Like a lot of Land Rover products, they do really suffer from rust on the back half of the chassis and then end up as patchwork quilt as each year more and more rust is chopped out and replaced with scraps of steels usually.
