I Cloud storage

I received a message on my mobile phone ( Apple I phone 6 ) saying something like Your I Cloud storage is almost full BUT you can purchase more storage for a price.
Is this a genuine message or some sort of scam ,i deleted the original message and if genuine do people pay Apple I cloud for additional storage , any answers/help will be appreciated.

I get loads of email about this. Strange as I do not have a apple product.

Why not check you cloud acc & see waht it says?

Probably genuine, if you check your iCloud usage "Settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud" what does it days your usage and limit is?

Thanks ,have just checked ,I Phone storage  19.7gb  of  64 gb used.
that does not look full to me ,is cloud storage the same ?

No iPhone storage is not iCloud storage 

I pay for the extra 50 Gig on  iCloud storage 

I get those emails and still have 9 Gig to use

I removed my photos from iCloud storage to have more spare.

I also pay for an extra 50 Gig on iCloud Storage. It costs 99p per month.

Go into Settings, Your name at the top, icloud and it will say X of Y used along with a chart showing what proportion of the storage different data types are using. 

If its genuine, it will show it as being fairly full... it its less than 75% full then clearly its a scam.

Alternatively look at, but dont click, where the message is trying to send you. If its apple it will be to iCloud.com or Apple.com, if its a scam it will be to iCloud.com.Somethingelse.com or AppleExtraStorage.com or such

And yes, people do pay Apple for Cloud storage, we have 1TB of photos and videos shared fairly seamlessly over 9 devices only taking a tiny fraction of that on the devices themselves.

Sorry i have checked I Cloud storage  4.3GB of 5GB used so it is almost full ,if i delete a lot of unwanted photos and vidios off my phone will they come out of my I Cloud storage?

Not quite. Go to settings/apple id/iCloud/photos to check if you are syncing photos. If you are then it's okay to delete on your phone the photos you don't want synced to iCloud

If you want to get rid of all the photos in iCloud then tap manage storage and then tap Turn off and Delete from iCloud.

If you haven't got photos synced then it's something else taking up space. Go to AppleId/iCloud/Manage Account Storage , it will show you what is taking up the space. That's what you'll need to turn off or delete to free up space.

Note that when you do this, it doesn't free up straight away. Eg you can download deleted photos for 30days.

If you are able it's a good idea to get some more storage.
