Wooden beam - white discolouration/mould

Hi,
We've got a few wooden beams around our home, but have noticed they have started becoming discoloured (white patches).
We have tried gently rubbing them down & some diluted hot water + vinegar, which has helped, but hasn't fully removed it.
Any tips of what is best to restore & protect these going forwards?
Thanks,

Does the white, brush off? is it perhaps a salt or similar coming out of the wood? Where are the beams located in your property?1

Thanks, all the beams are on the first floor (with loft space above it)Emmia said:Does the white, brush off? is it perhaps a salt or similar coming out of the wood? Where are the beams located in your property?
The white patches do come off with heavy brushing / wiping with hot water + vinegar0 -
Old building ?I suspect it might be lime from some very old plaster or limewash/distemper. Brush off any dust, wipe with a damp cloth but keep the vinegar for your chips - Acid damages wood.To protect the wood, give it a coat of linseed oil, not varnish or any modern paint.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
