Patchy lawn repair

Hi greenfingers,

We recently moved to our new house and the lawn looks a bit tired/patchy with a few dents/holes (probably because the previous owner had a dog!). I was looking to encourage growth with something like https://www.homebase.co.uk/gro-sure-multi-purpose-lawn-seed-50m2/12823472.html plus some top soil for levelling.

Would any peat-free compost like https://www.homebase.co.uk/homebase-peat-free-multi-purpose-compost-50l/12834297.html work or do I need specific one for mixing with lawn seeds?

TIA,
Your newbie greenfinger

Just level with the topsoil and then sow the seed in this. No need for compost.

    Don't do anything now.
    Leave it until October time.

Lawn feed is good, anything high in uric acid or nitrogen.
But it shouldn't be left on the lawn in heat or when dry in fact it's better to wait for autumn to do the repair.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • So topsoil like https://www.homebase.co.uk/homebase-top-soil-25l/12834306.html is good enough and wait till October to throw around lawn seeds?

Yes. The reason for waiting is it could save you a lot of watering, normal dew & weather will do the job for you, the grass will have grown enough to withstand winter cold and any snow, then ready to go come Spring
Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens
  • Perfect thanks all! I will wait then unless I can buy both seeds and topsoil now if there are good offers around and apply come October! :)

^ Interesting to know, thanks. I also have lots of patches on my lawns, I've been sowing seed in small areas as an experiment which is working better in some places than others, but good to have another approach, especially if it's less work for me.
