50% car tax disability reduction

Options
Just realised this morning that I’ve been overpaying car tax since 2018 and I’m cross.  If you get complete exemption from car tax because of claiming higher rate mobility on PIP, DVLA change your V5C.

if however, you get standard mobility on PIP, you are expected to claim by post every year.  I sent them the first evidence in 2017.  You don’t get reminded that you need to do it every year with your notification of car tax being due and I don’t get this anymore anyway because of DVLA encouraging people to use automatic renewal.  I’ve written to DVLA but my hopes are low.

did you not notice you were paying double each year? Claiming every year is standard and what everyone entitled to the discount has to do.

To my shame, no I didn’t.  It never occurred to me.  That is one of the reasons I am cross (with myself):   I’m not normally so stupid about these things.  But it seems a completely antiquated and stupid administrative system that needs you to do that anyway - especially when all the emphasis from DVLA is to do things online or automatically.

As advised on another thread the V5C taxation class has never changed for 50% reduction. Documents always have to be sent off to claim the 50% each year. Despite PIP starting 10 years ago they've never changed the way you claim the reduction.
    • People have been sucessful in claiming backdated car tax overpaid by way of a refund - so write to DVLA and ask / beg !

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.
