if the local shop will give you a price free of charge and without any obligation why not do that and then send it off to one of the postal sites that will also give you a value without any obligation and return for free.  Then you can pick the best price.

chances are though is that they will both do pretty much the same - weigh the bits and give you a price based on the current price for gold or silver without any consideration of what the piece actually is.

I took a box full of my mom's into a shop local to her (not in the UK) and they were very nice about giving general values to pieces including telling me to not bother even trying to ebay a lot of it as it was (in their eyes) merely costume even if it did contain some precious metals.  They did set aside a very few pieces which they said they might buy but only if I was willing to say up front that I would sell to them.  For those they gave a ball park figure which was very helpful.  I think it helped that I had been in there before, they knew my mom and that they were having a very very quiet day so had nothing better to do.

I sold two lots of broken gold jewellery to Hatton Garden Metals.  It was all very easy and I was more than happy with the £520 I received.  ( And 'No', I'm not affiliated to them in any way - just a genuinely happy customer)!

Did you go there in person?  Did you compare with any other buyers or was it the only you visited?  I also have some to sell and was wondering how to go about it.

All done online. Their price per gram was better than our local jewelkers.  Effortless transaction too.

If you go into a pawn shop, be aware of the price of gold - you can easily find this out by Googling.
For example, Hatton Garden buy 9 carat gold at £16.38 per gram.
Sell your gold and gold coins for the best prices - 9ct, 18ct, 24ct (hattongardenmetals.com)

I took a necklace in to 3 different pawn shops - I had weighed it on my jewellery scales - and the first offered me £300, the second £400 and I eventually sold it for over £500.

There is a gold buyer fairly local to me, she is currently offering to pay £17.63 per gram of 9 carat gold so you can see there is quite a difference.

Came across my old wedding ring the other day. 18ct white gold so I guess I'll be making a trip to get that sold.
