Hi all,
My son is moving into a shared house for 2 years next month, and the previous students had used Unihomes for the Gas / Electric / Broadband etc ..
I’ve done a quick quote on their website, but their quoted monthly repayment seems very high.

Can he change to another provider ? I’m guessing he’ll need the MPAN number etc ?
It’s in Guildford if that helps ?
Thanks

I thought that Unihomes was a payment plan scheme rather than a particular utility provider. So they will pick whomever the provider is (Eon, BG, Octopus etc), plus add all the other bills (TV license etc) add a premium and then split that between all the students in the shared house.
So yes Son could pick someone else than is actually supplying the place in agreement with all the other students living there but then there's the danger of someone not paying their share in which case the others have to pick up the slack. If all the others want to go with Unihomes then I don't think Son will have much of a choice as he can't be billed for just his electricity use as his room wouldn't have a meter and it wouldn't take account of what energy he uses in the rest of the house.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. He’s trying to avoid the premium they add …
Don’t think there’s any danger of the two others not paying though ..0 -
Dump them asap. Make each student responsible for one or two of the bills, good learning experience for them all.
I'd also question whether they really need a TV licence if they only watch TV on their laptops and their family's all have TV licences at the family homes.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
