Thanks @Longwalker! I'm only using dried milk out of last winter's emergency cupboard as I wanted to use up before it goes out of date, but I have heard of it being used as a thickener.
Now I'm off to look for muslin...I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

When you turn cream into butter, you extract their heaviest stuff out of the cream like water & protein. You dont get 1kg butter out of 1kg cream. You get far far less than that.I just googled and someone on a quora discussion suggestions that from 1kg cream you get 100-150g butter.0

"I was fortunate a few weeks ago to get 8L of Morrisons whipping cream for £4 on a Sunday afternoon. I made just under 4kg of butter and used the buttermilk to make yogurt.
I will probably never be that lucky again, it felt like winning the lottery."
So about 500g of butter for each litre (50% fat) and 4kg of butter for £4, the information was all there.
4kg of butter from the shops would be £32-£40?0 -
Got 300ml of Yellow sticker double cream from Morrisons for 41p and got 147g of butter from it.
Double cream turns into butter way faster than whipping cream.1 -

Double cream turns into butter way faster than whipping cream. Then you make the buttermilk into scones, which are also a lot more expensive than the sum of their ingredients.
My easiest butter came from some of the super-thick cream they sell at Christmas. Well worth looking out for this when they do the last minute reductions. I also had a go at turning brandy butter into cream and it worked but tasted... different.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
