The clue

Most of the time my friend broadcasts his opinions far and wide. But occasionally he keeps them submerged — and today is one of those occasions. I can detect some kind of problem looming below his placid surface, but I can’t quite fathom what it is.

We’re in an affluent waterside town, 21 miles northwest of a city centre and close to the mouth of an estuary. I want to honour the 19th-century birth of an inventor (mother: Jessie) — as well as see two buildings designed by a famous architect (father: William).

I’d assumed that Friend would be turned on by the thought of the inventor and his work. After all, we are talking about his favourite kind of box. But he seems restless as he drives me uphill, into the town’s neat suburban grid of elegant houses, in search of the inventor’s birthplace.

Then, when I steer him towards the larger of the architect’s two buildings — and another kind of box — he suddenly goes nuclear. “Here’s some breaking news,” he blurts. “Not everyone wants to look for old houses and dead people.”

Instead he insists that we drive up the eastern shore of a significant sea inlet, beyond the western tip of the town. That’s when — finally — I lock onto his target. I should have identified it much earlier. Now my programme for the day is in deep trouble.

“What’s the point?” I ask. “There’ll be nothing to see up there but wire fences and ‘No Unauthorised Access’ signs!” But I’m not much of a deterrent. Friend sets his course — and at a stroke torpedoes my itinerary.

The questions

1. What was the full name of the inventor?

John Logie Baird

2. What was the first name of the architect?

Charles / (Charles Rennie Mackintosh)

The prize

The winner and guest will stay for five nights, self-catering, at Samujana — a collection of 23 spectacular villas, each with a private infinity pool, on Koh Samui in Thailand. The villas range over a lush, forested hillside on the northeast coast of the island and offer between two and eight bedrooms, as well as cool, contemporary architecture and fabulous views. Some have their own gyms and cinema rooms. Guests also have the option to hire private chefs, book scuba diving classes and relax with spa treatments. For details see samujana.com.

Also included in the prize is a signature Thai Discovery meal on arrival, one massage each for the winner and guest and a budget of £1,800 for flights to Koh Samui. It must be taken before July 1, 2024, subject to availability and excluding December 19 to January 7, February 9 to 18 and April 2 to 12, as well as public holidays.

Answer the questions by the end of Wednesday, August 16. One entry per person. See here for the full competition terms and conditions from The Times & Sunday Times. Your information will be used in accordance with our privacy and cookie policy.
