First insurance 40 year old

I am shopping around insurances for a potential car (Toyota Yaris Hybrid, from 2016 onwards).
The price is important for me, the lower the better. I am not planning to drive a lot and far, especially first year, so I am wondering if there are any of those "by miles" insurance companies that work with beginners with no other insurance history.
I would be happy to know any other recommenadions you know would not cost an arm and a leg for a beginner (even adult beginner).
I was a member of "enterprise" car hire club for a year and paid for insurance there, would it it be considered anywhere? I am currently checking prices at comparethemarket, but should I check better somewhere else?
Thanks a lot!!

    So your an experienced driver?

Unlike Home insurers dont ask how long you've constantly held insurance. They ask about claims, convictions and NCD. There are many reasons why someone can have a long driving history, no claims but also no NCD. As long as you are otherwise a good risk many insurers given a discount worth close to a years NCD which is typically 50% of the total NCD you'd have after 40 years NCD.

Get quotes for both traditional and PAYG/blackbox insurance on aggregators like CtM and on those that dont go onto aggregators (Aviva, DirectLine etc) and see which you think will be better for you.

I have no experience apart from hiring a car with enterprise and being their club member for a year. As I got my licence 2 years ago at 38 years old.
I do not intend to drive a lot (as live in London), and would be more interested in something like "by miles". So wonder if its worth and if they bother with adult beginners like myself.

Insurers don't ask about experience. They simply ask how long you've held a licence.

You may have  been driving every day for two years, or on the other hand have never driven at all.

Go on the main MSE site and look up car insurance, follow the strategies there. Keep getting quotes until you are happy with one or you cannot see yourself beating the best offer. By the mile might work for you, though they are a bit of a niche product. When I looked into it for insuring a weekend car by the mile was much more expensive than a standard low annual mileage policy, if insurers see you as low risk a standard policy may be cheeper for you.

They also ask about years of NCD, I have zero (as I never had a car)

Yes, I am on comparison. Black box aparently is the way to go, otherwise 2K+. By miles refused to insure me as I have had no insurance on my name before.

Bymiles are very picky, they don’t insure my car. It’s because the glovebox will not close when tracker is fitted.
They provided a sort of thin scart lead to extend the length, thus allowing my glovebox to close.
But a call or two was needed to arrange this and get cover.
But just renewed with them for my 5th year in April. Go figure.
After you get a years NCB try them again.
