Had my car in for MOT and it failed. Its a 2007 Honda jazz se. It failed for brake pipe excessively corroded offside front. And also parking break efficiency below requirements. The garage told me they don't know the exact cost of the repair without getting it up on the ramp to dismantle and have a proper look but he estimated a ballpark figure of £500. Don't know much about cars but for a brake pipe and parking issue doesn't that seem excessive. Should I get a second opinion.

  • YES. My son drives a Honda Jazz, good little cars.  Definitely get a second opinion.
My son had similar issues with his MOT & got them all fixed along with 2 new tyres & paid £240

no way it should cost that much.
Some garages are rip offs you need to ask around and go to someone recommended by a friend or family member. You can also look at local Facebook groups for your area and someone will recommend someone to you!
Just type in your local town name and a group with come up usually town name people or something similar.

Hope this helps so let us know. 😊

It sounds like a 'worst case scenario'. They know there's a problem with the handbrake but don't know what's causing it atm.

Is this just a local garage that you have used before? Because that's what you need - someone you trust

Give a rough idea of where you are, say Croydon.
Then someone on here might be able to give you the name of a local ish mechanic.
    That quote sound expensive.

Not lived in the area long. Found them on Google have very good reviews. There is a mechanic closer to me who I used for a repair but he works on his own and was booked up for a while. He seemed very honest and trustworthy last time. Might it be worth booking it in for an MOT again with him?

Tell him what it failed on, ask him to do the repairs, and it should fly through the MOT.

They are quoting a high price in case it is an expensive job.

The brake pipe is easy and is probably around £100, but the handbrake could just need something cleaning up or adjusting, or could need new handbrake cables.

The time to find out and then sort the problem is the biggest expense.

Still seems excessive though, but I'm out of touch with labour rates.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Wouldn’t recommend driving to either area if brakes are gone 😂

I totally trust the guys at Watton Service Station in Stapleford but, depending on where you are in Welwyn, that's probably about 8 miles, so not the most convenient.
