Gas meter location

My gas meter is currently inside the garage (there for the last 50 years). I am converting the garage to a bedroom. The electricity provider is content for their meter to remain where it is. I want to simply relocate the gas meter approximately 3 meters, on the same wall within the same space. Does the gas meter now have to be located outside? Can I insist it remain inside. The supplier is British Gas, and their engineers are Cadent. They have quoted £900 which I am happy with. I just don't want the meter outside.

There's a term in the Electricity Standard Licence Conditions that says the supplier will choose where they want the meter and the customer cannot argue.
I don't know if the same term exists in the gas licence conditions.0 -
There probably is the same terms in the gas supply licence. In addition, there will be HSE rules that need to be followed - Pretty sure that a gas meter cabinet needs to be ventilated to the outside to prevent the build up of gas in the event of a leak. So best all round if it is outside. And no, you do not get the choice if the supplier says "outside".CSI_Yorkshire said:There's a term in the Electricity Standard Licence Conditions that says the supplier will choose where they want the meter and the customer cannot argue.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.1 -
in this case though its not the supplier moving the meter , its Cadent doing a well paid commercial move . It could add another £400 moving outside plus the expense of a box .FreeBear said:

Maybe the occupant who pays the piper can determine where the meter is positioned .

It's Cadent on behalf of the supplier, British Gas.SAC2334 said:

As far as the licence conditions are concerned, it is the supplier.2 -
There is of course a little matter of compliance with Statutory Instruments from which Ofgem regulation and guidance flows:

The meter in its current position fulfills all the regulations..There's hundreds of thousands installed in garages ,a great place for a gas meter..better than stuck under the stairs .a few yards further down the garage wall should be fine and I expect the Cadent guy will be only too happy to move it there...Much easier and faster job than drilling a hole through the wall and fixing a box outside..Dolor said:There is of course a little matter of compliance with Statutory Instruments from which Ofgem regulation and guidance flows:

In my area we had five gas meters nicked last winter which were in outside boxes..That info came from a Cadent worker I spoke to.
I wonder why people wanted stolen gas meters when the price of gas was sky high ?1
