On pay as you go and received paper bill.
Hi all.
I've been living in the same property for almost 20 years with the same pay as you go meter, and today I received a bill through the post from Scottish Power claiming I'm in debt of £80, and they have reset my meter and placed the debt on it. I contact them, they wouldn't explain to me how I could of consumed power without paying for it has I'm on pay as you go. I've never had a bill from them in the whole time I've lived here but apparently this year I'm in debt. This makes no absolutely no sense to me. Hoping someone can help.
Thanks

On prepays in the summer months you can fall behind by not paying the daily standing charges every week. This is only approx £5.50 a week so prob this would nt amount to £80 .it could if you had spent a few months away .
Have you checked your meters menu to see if you had a previous debt on it which has not been fully cleared.. you can see this on the debt and repay screens ..I think it's screen S and T for gas ,screens 26 and 27 electric..
The suppliers are supposed to send a paper statement every year, not a bill although I expect most don t do it0 -
If it's an old PAYG meter, have the rates been updated to the current ones resulting in a back dated debt ?0
-
Not been away for any long periods of time and the meter is topped up every 2 weeks, so there's always credit on the meter. No debts on meter prior to receiving the bill.

Does the meter show now a weekly debt repay amount so they collect the £80 at say £2.50 a week ? The meter has a debt repay rate on one of the screens.0
-
They're recovering it at £9.68 a week until November 17th that's what it states on the bill.0
-
Might show on next top up on the meter..if it's not on the meter it won t be collected0

Raise a complaint, get it started asap as that hopefully pushes them into a full explanation and if you are not happy follow through all the way to the ombudsman service.
