Suggestions for the new-look competition site

Yes, but MSE is not a comp site, it is a money saving site that just happens to have a Board for competitions.
If you want the facilities that can be provided by a dedicated Competition Site, then that is where you need to go.
You can't expect MSE to provide all the fancy competition features for one Board when most of their Boards don't need them.

It's never been just a competition site (although it was by a long long way the most popular part of the forum) - what damaged it most was when the forum was updated several years ago and many features were lost and have never been adequately replaced.

Even before the changes, MSE wasn't a comp site. As far as I am aware, it has never had the filtering functionality that some forum members have suggested it needs.

I was a member a long time ago  and for a very long time , but when I came back I had long since forgotten my login and had to start a new one.
