Opening a bank account

Returned from Ireland to the uk after 20years living with family until I get a house so no bills with my name as proof of address. Got NI no on HRMC letter but TSB won’t accept as proof of address. DWP can’t provide me with anything. Any advice what to do? Living in Scotland

Get on the electoral roll ASAP.

Monzo are known to be easier to get an account with, YMMV

That's because they were able to electronically identify you. Of all the dozens of accounts I've opened over the last few years the only ones I've had to proove my identity with were fintechs (who require it as part of the KYC, often), and joint accounts.

Do you have your birth certificate or a valid driving license even from Ireland? This should be valid for most banks.

However, if you continue to struggle, you could try a basic account which would be easier to get accepted for and then upgrade when you have the necessary documentation.

    2 accounts I'd recommend:

Getting on a utility bill and on electoral roll as suggested above would be good moves.

Do you not have a passport or driving licence - if not get one!  Yes they cost money but are very helpful. D Licence is cheapest to obtain (and provisional will do). Though bear in mind you need to replace the DL if you change address.  Passport is more pricey but doesn't need a fixed address.

Birth certificate suggested above is pointless - that merely proves someone of your name was born once, doesn't prove that you're that person, or even that that person is still living.

Birth certificates are not valid for any banks.  Also, even for a basic account the banks will still need to verify your identity.

I recently opened a Skipton Building Society account in-branch and they accepted my birth certificate as evidence.

Well they shouldn't have done, unless you're under 18, because birth certificate isn't on the Skipton's list of accepted ID.  Even under 18, a birth certificate isn't accepted except in conjunction with other documents.
