Hi, my dad wants to buy another car and has put down a £2000 deposit on it. It’s with a reputable dealer. Whilst dealing with the paperwork they said they can’t go forward with it at the moment as he’s waiting to get his driving license back. He’s driving under section 88. Does anybody now if they can actually stop him from buying it?

Yes. Any business is free to choose who they want as customers, provided there is no discrimination (race, gender, disability, etc. Or Nigel Farage.)

Sorry I’m a bit lost here.
How do they know about your Dad’s condition.
I have purchased 20 plus cars and never needed a license or told them anything about health conditions etc.
How much, ok here is your money.
    Thank you for my car.

There's no need for somebody buying a car to be entitled to drive it at all, so I don't really understand what they're getting at. I have recently bought a car, but I only showed my licence for the purpose of being allowed to test drive.
  • Is he wanting to test drive the car? If so, they may have asked to see his driving licence both as proof of identity and so that they can check he is covered by their insurance by checking for any points, bans etc.  If he does not have the licence he won't be able to comply.

Is this more an insurance and tax problem?
If the buyer can't for some reason insure the vehicle, it can't be taxed.

Getting insurance without a license is difficult as best.

You'd also hope a reputable dealer wouldn't let a vehicle leave them without appropriate insurance coverage.
I can't imagine a decent dealership even delivering one sorn'd without insurance if it was on finance either.

It may also have come to light if the dealership offer a few days free insurance. Once they know it is an issue it seems reasonable they want to make sure all is proper, had the OPs Dad said from the start he was buying a car for her (or whoever else) to drive then the probably wouldn’t have had any interest in his licence or lack there of.

They’ve asked to see his licence which he’s shown and it’s out of date. He has a 3 year medical licence. He has obviously applied for a new one but it’s taking some time to get it. He is allowed to drive under Section 88 but they won’t let him buy the car so I was wondering if they’re allowed to do that?
