Be careful with Group travel insurance - e.g. newspaper holiday offers

Two of my family members just encountered this.

They booked 2 holidays back to back with a famous newspaper. In France. First week in camping, second week in a villa. Not going home to UK in between. (That's the important issue!)

Vouchers were used for the purchase. They took advantage of the holiday insurance that was offered at the same time and took it for the whole trip... or so they thought!

They just phoned last week, because husband has a health condition with Acid Reflux and they thought they should check if it that would be a problem.

But what they then found out, is that the 2nd week of the holiday is NOT covered by that insurance policy anyway, because that "2nd holiday" was not starting in the UK.

(So the two parts of the trip were actually somehow being treated as 2 separate holidays, each of which needs insurance.)

Everybody looked into it and it was discussed with Underwriter, but they could not get around it.

Family have had to cancel it  and take a new one elsewhere that will cover the whole trip.

So was the insurance in some way tied to the trip?

Odd. We often take holidays where we are travelling round from one location to the next. I'm sure lots of people do "road trips" where they stay at many locations before returning home. In fact, I have a claim at the moment - original holiday booked as visiting (by plane A, B and C), due to an accident we moved our stay in B to A and our insurance are likely to pay the cost of our journey from A direct to C.

At what point are they different holidays?

    I just checked what happened.

It is a Group Policy that covers all these newspaper holidays that are purchased with vouchers.

Trip lengths are maximum 7 days.

Family is now having a problem getting the policy (policies) cancelled, because Underwriter agent is refusing to deal with it. (Said they do not deal direct with customers!) And newspaper is saying they cannot deal with it. So it is back with the newspaper at the moment, who had provided the e-mail address of that Underwriter agent.
