ULEZ Charge - Expansion

Hi can anyone help and clarify?

I have a 2009 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 SXi car and when I entered it's details in the ULEZ checker, the results showed it met the requirements. This means I do not have to pay the ULEZ charge when it's expanded to where I live. However, a friend mentioned I would need to pay the ULEZ charge when my car is 14 years old. Is this true? I thought the ULEZ charge was based purely on emissions and not the age of the car.

Depends if they move the goalposts 😉

What complies today, might not in the future.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)

    You're correct. Your friend isn't.

TFL do make a generalised statement that:

"Most petrol vehicles under 16 years old or diesel vehicles under 6 years old already meet the emissions standards"

    but it's only that - a generalisation.

It's dependant on emissions - not the age of the car.

Absolute nonsense and your friend has no idea what they are talking about. You are correct that it is based on emissions only. The date usually given is all petrol cars after 2006 are compliant but the reality is that many cars from 1998 onwards meet the requirements but might need a certificate from the manufacturer to confirm the emission levels if not shown on the V5. The key number is that the NOx levels are below 0.08g/km. It won't affect you are your car is shown compliant already if not but you might need to keep at TFL as they aren't very good at getting info correct.
