@rhemmings I think I would struggle in a little town like Leicester

Everyone is different. I find Leicester fine and like being able to live within walking distance of the city centre.

There is Birmingham, as has already been mentioned up above. Is that too small?

Many people offered similar advice on your previous thread: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6455887/sliding-doors-moment-ruined-my-life#latest

I feel that all still applies but perhaps the first improvement is to set your own independent goals, not always be in comparison or competition to this other party.

Footballers earn much more, in a year, than I ever will in my lifetime - am I bothered - no they do not influence my life in any way
Some entrepreneurs also apparently earn masses of money - am I bothered - no they do not influence my life in any way

They may have had the breaks and you all the tough luck but a broader perspective of those who are truly unlucky, (just read the news, floods, wild fires etc elsewhere in the world) may enable you to consider your position of relative health, wealth and success.
I offered the above in August and thought I was going to see some progression or add some comment but the only thing i can think of right now is

There's none as deaf as them't don't want to listen!

Sad really that despite all the patience and sterling efforts of the people contributing great advice across all aspects of your issue and when considering areas in the world where many people are being killed daily, you continue to troll about a little bit of cash!

Visited Old Leigh, or all of Leigh-on-Sea?

What is it you think other people do? Most people I know have barely any savings. My boss is buying for 8 figures and still has mortgages and loans (prob as much for his credit record as much as it being needed).

I truly believe nobody will say anything to convince you otherwise. What you're waiting to hear is "you absolutely need a million in the bank to never spend, but as a backup. That means you need to earn enough still to live comfortably. Put your entire life on hold until you have the million. Don't waste money on holidays, travel, cars, sandwiches, coffees, SAVE SAVE SAVE."

Now that may be advice for a FTB with limited savings or debts, but not someone in your shoes. Until you can recognise the problem is yours and yours only, you'll never be rich enough or happy enough. Promise you.

    Good luck.

Is the little town in Midlands called Hampton-in-Arden, by chance? The number of Teslas and Rolls-Royce in the streets would be a giveaway :)

So in the last 20 pages have we learnt why the house went up so much?

5 Teslas in my tiny village makes me very jelly!

Not sure about your tiny village, but Hampton in Arden is a bit on a posh side now.
  • OP, it’s about perspective. My brother earns about 3 times as much as me, owns a rental property outright and has a small mortgage.  You will probably consider him successful. He is also single and lives miles away from family members.  I earn just above minimum wage and support 3 others (mature student husband and two teens) on that plus benefits.  I’m also happily married with children, and live in the same town as several family members.

On paper, my brother is more “successful”.  I wouldn’t trade my life for his.  I also know that if we were struggling financially, he would - and has - helped out.  Life’s too short to be jealous.  You don’t know what your “friend” is up to.  Live your life, not his.

FWIW, I’ve known people who have retired and the next day had a massive heart attack and died.  I’ve known people who have gone to work and not come home.  I also know people who stretched themselves financially and have ended up existing in retirement because they can’t afford anything other than the bare essentials.

@sheramber my thoughts were that I'd keep the million and spend what I have over a million

So you need more than a million and a source of income to keep up with your spending.

The OP has another post about another person who has made lots of money and how have they done it.

I suggest he talks to these people and finds out how they did it.  They wil be able to give him more information than us plebs.
  • @herzlos we do go on holiday, we went to Southend this year. We do both feel we've now seen enough of Southend and would like to see more of the world. Wouldn't you agree though that it would be more sensible to buy a house first? Not only would it take £3k out of our fund but the bank would also see we spend £3k on holidays and lend us less accordingly.

Regarding a car, neither of us are going to use it to drive to work. I would have to park at an expensive car park some distance away from the office, pay the congestion charge and negotiate heavy traffic. I work right next to a tube station and live pretty close to one too, it would be mad to drive there instead. When visiting family, we can get cheap advance tickets to see my parents in Leeds and her parents live right next to a train station in Kent so can't see us using a car for that. Going to the local shops is probably quicker walking. If we had a car we'd use it very rarely so doesn't make much sense to have one when we're trying to save money.

I'm honest about my finances with her. She has access to our savings too. She just takes no interest in anything financial.

@MeteredOut you said something similar earlier on and I sent you details of the property in question to show it's genuine.

@RelievedSheff I would send to you but am a bit nervous given someone else has managed to find the property

@Ditzy_Mitzy the tube costs more than £100 a month but that's the only viable way of me getting to work. According to a lot of people my ability to do my a job counts for nothing because I'm too stupid to have a job and my stupidity means I'll never understand the world of work. That doesn't give much hope for my future job prospects and it scares me. He mentioned nothing about my financial situation. The only time I recall him talking about money was when he was living in a flat in London and he said he was saving money to buy somewhere bigger, a bit like I'm doing now albeit several years later.

@RHemmings Birmingham is big enough, only London is bigger. However it's not a very nice city from what I've seen.

@BikingBud I've listened to every single response on here. Yes I know I'm not as unfortunate as those getting killed daily but this is a forum about money so surely that's what I should be posting about?

@hazyjo I've been to the beach, along the cobbled streets as you walk away from the beach and have also been out to the castle past the train station. Don't know if there was anything else to see.

I do believe a lot of people do have some money stashed away somewhere. I know it's fiction but the way Del Boy is broke but then finds a stash of money when he needs it happens in real life. My parents were working class without much money, but if they suddenly needed £3k for something they'd have it. The only person that knows I have any savings at all is my wife and I'm forever telling my friends that I'm broke.

@Emily_Joy no it's not, I've heard of Hampton-in-Arden. This is a town without a train station.

@markin I've never been to that town so don't know

@Bonniepurple I always wanted to move away from Leeds when I was younger so it was always inevitable I'd be away from family.

    @wjr4 why?

@sheramber I could ask the person who sold that house, I have his number but I don't think it would go down too well. I have no way of getting in touch with the person in the other thread, but that's not relevant to this thread. The first point is a good one though, I need to have a think about that.
