Wilko going into administration - What happens to any orders?

Hello everyone.  I'm sure you may have heard that Wilko is going into administration.  I placed an online order with them just a couple of days ago.  It wasn't a huge amount - only £45.  I paid with an Amex credit card.  The order hasn't been shipped yet, so just a bit concerned as to what happens if they are preparing to go into administration?  Do I have any rights if they don't send the item? If so, what?

If they do not turn up. A nice straight forward non receipt chargeback.

Ah that's a pity. Always found Wilko really useful but it's just hard on the high street now.

I'd say you'll be fine with orders - even if they go into administration no doubt they will want to sell as a going concern so they will keep trading and fulfilling customer orders as long as they can. No reason to suspect they won't dispatch what you have paid for provided they have it on hand to send to you.

What happens depends on what the Administrator finds and how viable they believe the business remains. There have been several stores that have gone into administration and appeared from the other side, eg Joules last year re-emerged but closed a number of their physical stores.

If they decide it's a dead duck then orders will be cancelled and you will be an unsecured creditor to a bankrupt business. Thankfully as you paid by card however you can perform a chargeback, their merchant bank will have to refund you the money and they become the unsecured creditor to the business.

For now its a case of wait and see

Thanks so much for your replies everyone.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

I just want to add that although the item which is a wallpaper mural for kids bedroom was ordered directly from Wilko website, they subsequently have said that it is going to be dispatched from one of their suppliers.  Can this make any difference as the supplier is not Wilko?

Also sorry for a silly question, but ilat what stage of the order would I request a chargeback and how is it requested from American Express?

Could go either way - maybe more likely to receive since its not Wilko doing the transaction so no reason for it to be an issue, could be less likely to receive if supplier has not been paid yet by Wilko and they fear not getting their money.

I think you would need to wait until there is an outcome on your order - it'll either be fulfilled (most likely) or cancelled. If they cancel it contact your card company but honestly I wouldn't worry about it. I'd say 98% you'll get your item unless Wilko are in more dire straights than I imagine.

Claiming money back via chargeback NO.
But the supplier maybe owed money, so may not supply it now, given the potential administration. As they will want to minimise their losses.

  • I'm getting concerned as I ordered a greenhouse which was supposed to be delivered today at the latest. But there have been no dispatch/tracking details given. Also I can't reach anyone by phone - there's a form which promises a response within 72 hours. Should I be concerned?

Their website says home delivery is temporarily unavailable, so I suspect your greenhouse may not be arriving anytime soon

Probably not as concerned as the employees that are having to answer a deluge of questions about greenhouses and cleaning products etc whilst worried if they'll have a job tomorrow
