When someone has been diagnosed with the above, DVLA's website states you need to inform them if it lasts for 3 months or more. What about car insurance - do you notify them after the 3 month mark also? Do you need to stop driving for a certain period of time?

You need to ask your consultant or medical specialist.  If they tell you not to, you must not drive until they specifically say you can, otherwise you will effectively be driving without insurance.

What does your insurance policy state about having a medical condition which requires you to  notify the DVLA?

Your insurers will only want to know about conditions that are notifiable to the DVLA, confirmation that you have notified them and maybe what the DVLA response was. You will need to check your policy on if you have to declare this mid term or only at renewal as insurers vary

BTW, you don't need to tell DVLA unless it was a notifiable condition; just follow the medical advice regarding driving.

Never ask a question you don’t want the answer to.

but it is a notifiable condition if it lasts for 3 months, as you said in your first post.

If you look at your policy now you will know what to do.

if you are still suffering from it, do you feel you can drive safely?
if you cause an accident due to the condition how would you feel?

You do need to be told not to drive if you  do not feel you can safely drive without having any symptoms.

I'm not driving and have a gp appt booked for 2 weeks, when I'll ask what to do if symptoms persist. I'm feeing back to 'normal' today so will see how I go without medication. Supply was for a maximum of 7 days (at home) but had been taking it for 7 days while at hospital.
  • Is it definitely just labyrinthitis? I ask as I have Meniere's Disease which presents like labyrinthitis. I didnt drive for months when it was flared up but filled out the dzy form on the dvla website. I kept my licence as I get warnings of vertigo attacks. You should notify your insurance when you notify the dvla. It's up to you to decide if you're safe to drive or not if a consultant hasn't told you not to. I just always thought of the worst scenario.
