Do I have to change my tyres now in order to pass mot , the little rubber indicator in the thread isnt levelled with the tyre and when checking with 20p coin the thread is just where the rim is but its not above it. Thanks! And also what is the cheapest place to buy tyres? Asda_tyres online?

Sounds like they should just pass, though bear in mind the tread depth must be above the minimum across the central 3/4 and all around the tyre, if there is an area more worn then the tyre should fail.

Cheapest place for tyres will depend on what you have available locally, for budget tyres I find a local independent to be cheap enough to not bother trying to shop online, for premium tyres I shop around online for the tyres delivered then get them fitted at a garage I know for £12 each. It sounds like you will want new tyres even if they get through the MOT, running tyres to the legal limit is a false economy IMO as I doubt many people hold onto cars long enough to save a tyre change by running to the limit rather than changing at 3mm.

Anecdotally I've hear the police will let people off with one worn tyre if the rest are good but not if all are down to the limit, whilst I have no evidence for this there is a logic that they would take pity on someone with 3 tyres with plenty of tread and one just below on the promise the money would get spent straight away on a new tyre.

Why do folk regard running tyres down to the legal limit as a ‘false economy?’ For safety’s sake alone, wouldn’t you replace before they get that low. Obviously not

How nice you are worried about my safety . What if im selling this car and there is no point of me investing in it? Or maybe I rarely drive short distances so its not that important? And also if its a legal limit then it should be safe, right ? If you disagree write to those who deal with policy makings …

All for the reasonable cost of several hundred pounds.

The legal limit is safe. Anything above is just safer

Not quite as safe in winter when the roads are wetter.
Other countries have higher legal tyre standards.

OP, I used black circle last time, got the same tyres fitted by the same garage for about £15 less than the garage would supply and fit for. I've also used Kwik Fit in the past when they had an offer on - despite generally avoiding them for other things, if they have a deal on they are pretty good for fitting new tyres.
