However I think the OP could make a reasonable arguement that the same principle should apply to him.
Despite the fact that the OP states that they had a letter informing them that they needed to contact their insurers to renew and didn't read it fully?

I never auto renew but some years ago Hastings came up with a price to good to turn down. When the documenatation arrived I saw it said that I had aopted for auto renew. Contacted them by phone and said no I did not and confirmed in writing. They replied in writing saying they noted I did not opt for auto renerw and had amended their records.
12 months later they tried to auto renew but I rang them and said I did not authorise it. Send us prooof they said - No said I look in your files - heard no more.

Depending on how prominently it warned him of the fact that it would not auto-renew as it had previously done; yes, quite possibly. Have a read of this case.

  • There was no warning that it would not auto-renew. Just an email saying 'please call us'.

Annoyingly, they have got my complaint confused with someone else's, very similar, complaint. The other person appears to be complaining about missing paper notifications. It seems pretty unprofesional for them to be describing details of someone else's case to me.
