Cheapest phone for banking apps

I have an old iPad which is no longer able to install the updates for banking apps.  I don’t want the apps on my phone or work iPad.

I want a device that stays at home and will be able to cope with banking updates for a few years.

I prefer apple, but can deal with an android. What can you recommend that will be the cheapest/best device to achieve this? Thanks

There's no 'one size fits all' answer - different apps have different minimum specs, so you need to consider which ones you wish to install prior to evaluating options....

Might as well invest in a new one.
After checking what spec's you banking apps require.

As you never know just what bank may do with their apps.

Cheap Android devices are a minefield because many are still being shipped with 32bit OS' and these won't work with some banks' current apps e.g., Chase and they'll no doubt become even less compatible as time passes and banks move to 64bit only.

Apple has committed to provide iPhones with security updates up to 6 years after their release. The current iPhone SE (the cheapest currently available iPhone) was released in March 2022 meaning it will receive updates until March 2028. On that basis, this may be your best option.

That being said, it's impossible to know what requirements banking apps will have in the future.

But almost no banking apps are available from the Amazon app store. Yes, there are ways round that, but it's a right ol' faff.

Why don't you want to use your phone? Assuming it is new enough to get the current versions of the apps you need, that is the cheapest solution.

Apologies I didn't realise that, I have Google Play store on my Amazon tablets. It did used to be a faff to add Google store initially it's not anymore can be done in 5 mins

I carry my phone about, take it on holiday and accept a level of risk. I don’t feel comfortable having savings and banking accounts at that level of risk.

It feels like walking around with all your cash and credit cards and passbooks which in olden times I would never have done.  R4’s Moneybox has been raising the issue recently.

I also don’t need access to that information when I’m not at home and prefer to keep it separate.
