Mould on Bathroom Ceiling

Hi,

I have been having issues for years now with mould on the bathroom ceiling. The batroom window is open most of the time, there is a functioning extractor fan that automatically comes on when the shower is on and reamins on for about 10 minutes afterwards but none of this helps.

The ceiling is virtually impossible to clean and I have painted the ceiling on multiple occasions with bathroom ceiling paint to no avail, is there anything else I can do?

Thanks in advance.

We need to leave our fan on and a window open for a couple of hours to clear out the dampness so I don't think the 10 minutes is sufficient even if the fan is super efficient.  Also we tend to remove the damp towels and bath mat so that they don't also need to dry in a very damp room - when we don't the bath mat and bigger towels may still be damp a day or two later.

Obviously warm dry air will dry things faster than cool muggy air so any chance of installing a fan heater of some sort?  Not that you want to use one this time of year perhaps but it would certainly help in the winter.

When not is use, do you leave bathroom door open or closed?

Have you tried a paint such as this

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175811696292

I would consider getting some mould cleaner, which should kill off the roots, scrubbing the ceiling and once dry giving it a paint with the above.

Assume you aren't drying clothes in the bathroom? Do you have any heating in the bathroom?

The problem is that your fan is on a timer and not controlled by a humidistat. Get the fan changed for one that will run until the humidity in the bathroom as been reduced below 70% RH.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Is the ceiling insulated? My mother had this problem when someone doing some work didn't replace the insulation correctly.

+1 for a good quality humidistat fan. They do the job.

Interesting stuff about the humidistat fan, not heard of them.

Another vote for the perma white. Zinzzer also do a product called cover stain too, you might want to get rid of all mould, use cover stain then perma white.

I used Perma-white in my old bathroom, which was quite small; the problem never returned.  It's not the classiest look, but it's quite effective.

Think about your extraction point relative to the incoming air source.  If it's by the window and the window is open then the air will mostly move between the two.  Ideally the extractor is opposite the door, which is the most common entry point.

10 minutes won't be long enough unless it's a very powerful fan.

This is a good point, we live in a house that is certainly colder than most and probably on the damper side, we don't get mould on the bathroom ceiling (which is insulated) we do however get a bit around the window on the reveals which are basically solid stone with lime plaster meaning the water condenses more as it hits the cold surface.
