It's solid brick wall (hopefully I won't find any more surprises. I'm still refitting this house and I've seen than enough shoddy works for a lifetime, like plastering on top of the wallpaper, using chalk to fill in holes and leaving planks not nailed to the joists).

I'd never thought of drilling a hole in the joists because I thought that it would weaken them.

    Thank you!

    I've found this video

Not exactly in the center of the joist, but I see what you mean.

Lots wrong with that video. Not sure why a DIYer would feel competent to advise on electrical installation.

It's an interesting topic! The forces on a bending beam are concentrated on their tops and bottoms - the former being compressed, and the bottom being pulled apart. The middle just effectively holds the two together.
A cut or notch at the top - or bottom - will effectively reduce the overall height of the beam - not good. Folk often 'get away' with it simply because these joists are over-spec'ed.
A hole drilled through the centre will have very little effect; a 10mm hole, negligible.
Good luck - sounds like a 'project'!

Videos like that should be banned! I haven't watched it all but assuming a socket is on a ring because it has 2 red wires and then spurring 4 double sockets off it is wrong (and against regs) in so many ways.
