E: 02/08 Win a luxury break in Crete worth £1,800 with Domes Aulus Elounda

Where Was I?
The clue
My friend grows impatient. “Oh, for Pete’s sake!” He cries. “Can’t we go to the tasting now?”
Again I explain the importance of this ruin, set at the end of a causeway on a lake. “I don’t care whose palace this was,” he counters. “Or what islands they ruled. You can’t lord it over my schedule like this.”
All right, let’s try a hybrid tour instead. It’s a distillation of the best bits of both our wish lists. The first stop is on the south coast. It’s my treat: a memorial to a son of this island who later became a patriot of another country. Friend then gets his tasting in a production facility 630 yards east-southeast of the memorial.
I was hoping that would be enough. But he insists that I drive to a second facility a mile east-northeast of the first, followed by third nearly a mile further on. By now I’ve abandoned all hope of viewing the three mountains on the far side of a narrow sound — just like his taste in drinks, Friend’s sense of humour is earthy, and I dread to think what he’d say about them. So I take him instead to a ruined church, made magnificent by the ancient, richly carved cross in its graveyard and its medieval tombs.
I wonder if the latter belonged to the owners of the palace — it’s only 11 miles north-northwest of here. Friend shrugs. Then he hiccups. “You know what I wonder?” He says. “Where’s the nearest McDonald’s. I’m starving.”
“Pity I can’t send you there right now,” I tell him. “Because it’s 51 miles east of here.”
The questions
