I recently checked my classic cars on the TFL website:

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/motorcycles-mopeds-and-more?intcmp=52209

and discovered that one of my vehicles which on the V5 registration document has a Tax Class of "Historic Vehicle" gives a response that implies that I have to pay to enter the ULEZ Zone.

NOTE: If a vehicle is exempt the response states that the vehicle is exempt, if not it lists the charges you need to pay.

I contacted TFL and their response contradicts its self and leaves me confused!

The 3rd paragraph appears to contradicts the statements made in paragraphs 2 & 4!

I checked the TFL website again and it is still not shown as exempt!

Be very careful!

I don’t understand the contradiction? You will need to pay the congestion charge?

Reply to the letter querying the fact that the ULEZ charge is showing.

    Nobody here will know why.

Go back for clarification, but that reg whilst is for a 1976 vehicle is showing first reg at DVLA in 2010.

OP may wish to delete their name from the graphic.

There does not seem to be any contradiction that the OP sees - some vehicles have to pay ULEZ plus Congestion Charge.  The statements simply say the OP would not have to pay ULEZ, but would have to pay Congestion Charge (smaller zone than ULEZ).

The possible contradiction is the vehicle registered in 1976 so not eligible under the "pre-1973" criteria and maybe, somehow, the V5 is in error.  The ULEZ online tool is probably simply looking at date of the vehicle.

The whole process with the TFL contact centre about ULEZ is a complete farce. Multiple replies to me told me that my car was not compliant because it was older than 2006 when I knew it was compliant and had provided the documentation to TFL to prove it. It doesn't look like their processing for historic vehicles is any better than their procedures for exemption based on NOx emissions.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

If it's a 1976 it can be a Historic Vehicle (pre-83) but I think that has to be specifically applied for.  Could that be the issue?
I need to think of something new here...
  • I have a 1975 vehicle and it listed as liable for the ULEZ charge, even though it's an Historic Vehicle. However, on the payment page it does actually show as zero payment for the ULEZ charge. A number of members of our classic car club have also found this out and it seems, like a lot of TfL procedures, it could be a programming issue which will probably never be resolved.

Makes a bit of a mockery of the scam. A 1962 car which probably breathes out more pollution than something 50 years newer.
Also perfect if some sort of pay per mile tracker is required in future - Positive earth, wouldn't work. :D
