I've always used Google maps when driving long distances or somewhere new and never had an issue.
But the last 3/4 times I have used it, I have had problems with GPS keep being lost. Not sure f it is an issue with my phone or a Google maps issue.
Is there anything else out there than can be used instead of Google maps? or should I just buy a sat nav?

If it's been cloudy on the days you've driven that could have caused the issue and I've found the signal can be affected by very tall buildings and trees. SatNavs can suffer from the same issue too.

Waze is a very good naviagation app, but is also owned by Google so not sure if it would suffer similar issues.

Have you tried using a different device to see if its that causing the issue?
  • It does sound like the problem is likely to be hardware but you could try AmiGo, the free version of TomTom Go.

Many phones have a built in test features that include the GPS receiver, have a look for that.

Where exactly do you have your phone in the vehicle ?

If it is not near a window with a view of the sky you may have issues.

I've found Google does that now and then, it gets better on its own eventually.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Hi Madlyn,

I hope I find you well.

Maps on your phone, tend to work in one of two ways.

either the maps help in the cloud and the phone relies on a good phone signal / data to update the map against your GPS position that your phone provides.

Google Maps / Waze / Apple Maps are typical examples of those types of app.

Apple Maps / Google Maps, do offer you the ability to download proportions of maps, so technically you can download the maps to avoid any issues with signal / data loss.

the other type of navigation software is TomTom or Sygic, which download full maps onto your device and are normally apps which cost, due to this.

the advantage being the navigation doesn’t rely on data signal, just the GPS on your phone and battery.

all the above I’ve mentioned work with CarPlay / Android Auto (note I’m an iPhone user so Apple Maps for example, won’t work on Android obviously).

    hope this info helps you.

    Cheers
    Darren
