Starling Switch

I requested account switch my Bank of Scotland account to Starling.

This was done on 25tu July with switch to be completed on 2 August.

I requested to cancel the switch but they are saying the switch has already started and they cannot cancel.. I mentioned the terms states I can cancel within 7 days before the switch date in this case it is 2 August.

Starling has said the 7 days starts before the switch start date example if I requested a switch in future date I could have cancelled. As the switch has started I cannot cancel.

It seems wrong that I do not want to continue with the switch but they cannot do anything about it.

What they are saying is that right?

I thought I can stop the switch as long as the account has not been switched over.

Thanks

My understanding is that you can only cancel a switch up to the seventh working day before it completes, so once you're in that period you're irreversibly committed. Do you have a link to somewhere authoritative that contradicts this?

The switch started on 25th July to complete on 2nd August. So I cannot cancel now.

I have spoken with Bank of Scotland and they cannot do anything. They said Starling has to cancel it but they also said as the switch has started they may not be able to cancel.

The switching website states I have 7 days before the switching date. I thought the switching should be the date account is switched in this case 2 August.

Confused. it does look like I can't do anything.

Have you got your dates right? I thought the absolute minimum time for a switch was 7 working days.
But eskbanker is correct - you can only cancel if there are more than 7 working days to go.
You haven't said why you want to cancel but you can always switch away from Starling once that switch is complete.

Switching is effectively a 7 working day process, even though it's the last of these that's referred to as 'the switching date' - the days leading up to that are when all the preparatory activities are undertaken, such as migrating direct debit mandates and so on.

Don't forget weekends are non working days.
So if you cancelled on the 25th, you were to late.
25th is day one, 2nd is day 7.

  • You can actually cancel right until the working day before the switch but the Direct Debits will have already moved.
Ask either Starling or Bank of Scotland's switching team to manually reject the switch request.

This is the official answer from CASS, the Current Account Switch Service:

"What if I change my mind?
You can cancel your switch up to seven working days before your switch date. If you do want to cancel, speak to your new bank, who can guide you through this process."

Yes, that was what I was paraphrasing as it's poorly worded IMHO! As I understand it, it's intended to convey that the final opportunity to cancel is 7 working days pre-switch, but could be interpreted as 'up to 7', e.g. 6, 5, etc, i.e. the opposite of what's meant....

However, as above, there may be a manual/partial mechanism, which might work for OP, depending on why they're trying to cancel.
