    Another vote for Linux Mint....
What hasn't been mentioned is that the ATOM N270 utilises a 32-bit instruction set.
I did mention that above, as well as confirming that Mint ran without problem for me on an old XP Pro laptop set to run as 32bit on 64bit architecture.

Actually you didn't. You wrote that you installed Linux Mint on a completely unrelated device with 64-bit architecture.
That doesn't cover a device with 32-bit architecture, nor speak to the version of Linux Mint that can be installed to it.
You did suggest they could install a 32-bit version of Windows 10, but I would not recommend that for the single core ATOM processor.

.... be aware that your N270 processor is 32 Bit ....
    Which seems clear enough?

To you. In reality it was a confusing jumble. Running a "32-bit OS on 64-bit architecture" not pertinent to the OP's case. Also your laptop has a dual core CPU, again differing from the OP, so your running Cinnamon also not pertinent.
You also stated that they didn't mention which model, when it was in their very first post.
Then you switched to suggesting that they install a 32-bit version of Windows 10....

So let's just say that I put everything in it's proper context.

Thanks for all the replies so far.  I've ordered both a stick of 2GB ram and a 128GB SSD.  Just waiting for them to arrive.  Have been looking at a few distros, and noticed a lot have stopped support for the 32bit systems.

I have already covered that, if you take the time to actually read my posts...
