Capquest and Opos

Options
I have received a random letter today saying that Capquest have taken over a debt owed to Shop Direct Finance Company Limited and that the account is being managed by Opos Ltd. I haven’t taken out a credit agreement in over a quarter of a century. Opos stated on the phone that they couldn’t find my “account” and the Capquest website says it can’t verify my “account details” - is this a scam? I have a clean credit record.

Won`t be a scam, they are legitimate debt collection companies, its probably an old account belonging to someone with details similar to yours, where details are scarce as to the identity of the debtor, these companies carry out what`s known as a fishing exercise in the hope someone will bite, and you did.

Your best approach is to send the "provit letter" this asks them to prove you owe the debt, if they can`t do that, it ends there, if there isn`t anything on your credit report in relation to this, it`s likely to be either too old to report or its not your debt, or both.

I have now sent three data subject access requests as advised by National Debtline and they have not responded except to take approximately £60 off what they said I owe. There’s nothing on my credit report.

Just a provit letter would suffice.

@Karr55 what was your outcome on this? I’ve just received a letter from CAPQUEST claiming the same thing and I don’t have any debt or records on my Experian credit report. I haven’t made any contact to CAPQUEST going by @sourcrates reply to you about a ‘fishing exercise’. I’m thinking I should ignore them as it’s false and don’t want to get caught up with any nasty/stressful battle on something that doesn’t exist.

If they have written to you, are they asking for money, or is it a "just for your information" type letter?

It may not be your debt, but then again it might be a very old account long since forgotten about.

If its the former, send the provit letter, if the latter, file and ignore for now.

Very old accounts get bought and sold and then companies such as this try to get you to pay them, even though they will usually be long past limitation.
