Home vs Buildings Insurance

My partner and I bought a house one year ago.
We got buildings and contents insurance through one provider
Later we wanted the cheapest energy deal but could only get this by also purchasing home insurance with this company.
We are now due to renew the building insurance - do we need both the building insurance and the home insurance (both cover contents)
The energy and home insurance has automatically renewed.
I am hesitant to cancel the buildings insurance but my partner thinks if we have cover from 2 different companies that could mean neither one wants to let us claim if needed.
Any advice much appreciated.

What is "home insurance"?  As in, what is it actually covering?

Is it a home emergency cover type thing?  Contents insurance?  Buildings & contents?

Your mortgage lender (assuming you have a mortgage) will insist that you have buildings insurance.  Not B&C, just B.

There's nothing stopping you from having B insured by one company and C by another.

I should imagine that the cover you have from your energy company is just home emergency cover which covers loss of services.

You will still need separate buildings and contents insurance.

Are you sure the energy company sold you Home insurance? Are you sure it isnt Home Emergency insurance?

Who is the energy company? Dont know any utilities firms that offer Home insurance but the likes of British Gas do offer HE
  • Utility Warehouse do building and contents (home) insurance which offers a preferential energy cost.

You need to check what you have - you only need to insure your buildings once and your contents once. This can be with the same or different providers.
