Too late to plant onion seed for bulb onions for this year.
You could sow spring onion seed now for salad onions.
You might just get a crop depending on where you are in the country.

So what happens if i plant them now? when should they be planted?0

If you plant them now they won't grow enough to make a bulb.
If they survive the winter they will only grow a little. So it will be a 3rd yr before you get onions if everything goes well.
Poundland used to sell sets in the autumn or spring. Surprisingly good onions if planted in the autumn.
Onions are hungry so need good soil.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
