hi
apologies for the long post

wonder if anyone can help

i had my daughter come home as she’s temporarily working away and thought I would put her on my car insurance on Saturday 22nd July who don’t do temporary additional drivers it has to be on the full 12m cover and as my insurance was due to renew on the 10th  Aug I thought I would do it on the app however after it coming back with a premium of £485 I thought ok happy with that covering me/wife and now daughter for 12 months,
however it’s still now showing as my policy expiring on the original date 10/08/23 so as you only can communicate via email I sent one straight away querying this and explaining I wanted to renew early to include my daughter (30yrs old) and nearly 2 days later saying apologies for taking longer then said

Upon reviewing your policy, I can confirm that we can not change the renewal date as it is the date you purchased the policy

Anyone know where I stand as I’ve emailed again saying why would I pay £485 for 19 days cover and also asked to cancel the additional driver and a refund

Thanks

Paul

You cannot renew early in the sense that the renewed policy starts earlier - doesnt work like that.

They are free to charge whatever they like in this case £485.

Have a look at temporary driver insurance with companies like Veygo that work as an add on policy to our QMH policy. Alternatively look at a comparison site for a different insurer and take out another providers policy (cancelling your QMH policy) if its cheaper. Or wait until your renewal date, dont renew the QMH policy and take out a policy with another provider

Do you have any screenshots or copies of emails they sent you? Have you seen how much has actually been charged to your card?

If they dont do TADs then the next step would be to add them for the remainder of the policy year, it certainly wouldnt be normal for any form of Mid Term Adjustment to change the expiry date of a policy. If they said it was £485 for 12 months have they then prorated that for just the remaining 19 days of the policy?

Is she a young/newly qualified driver that could justify very high charges or older?

    hi SaverRate/DullGreyGuy
thanks for the reply I’ll call my card issuer and see what’s been charged.
My policy without my daughter on was only £260 so I’m not just going to accept that a 26 day policy costs nearly £500 including admin fee to change driver for less than a month,
my daughter has had her license for over 12 years.
it’s frustrating only communicating by email so will see what they come back with
note the next renewal is  £570 with QMH
I’ve got a quote from another company that’s £440 ish so cheaper than the premium for adding a driver apparently 😂

QuoteMeHappy must have changed a great deal since I last used them a few years ago.

I chose them specifically because at that time you could go online to make changes such as add or remove additional drivers without any fees.
I did this several times when my daughter or other family members came to visit and it worked fine for me, each time paying no admin fees and pro rata charge for a few days cover. The only minor inconvenience was that temporary drivers' details could not be stored and had to be entered from scratch each time.
