We have bought 'grandad' an i-pad as he's finding the laptop a little cumbersome.

Laptop (W10 and Thunderbird) is currently set to use pop3 for emails.

Is it as simple as just going into TB and swapping from pop to imap (and changing the server settings) or will there be further complications?

It should be as simple.  The emails that have already been received on the laptop won't appear on the ipad, because POP3.

Not quite that simple, but this explains it all very well ...

They probably will if he was using thunderbird, the default account setting is "leave messages on server".

I'm still on a blueyonder email address, and if I pick up email with Thunderbird on the PC via pop3 I can still read it on my 'phone via pop3.

I even made sure thunderbird was off and got an email onto my phone, it was still there for thunderbird 10minutes later- maybe it is a Blueyonder/Virgin thing.
