How much travel cancellation cover do I need?

Options
Do insurers have a standard approach to paying out per person or per claim on cancellation events when it comes to family policies? I am specifically wondering about the following: If our family holiday is costing £5,000 and there are 5 of us on a policy, does that mean we need cancellation cover of £5,000 or £1,000 (because they would pay £1,000 per person in the event of a successful cancellation claim)? Thanks

Surely it would need to cover £5k as it's a family holiday.  Your kids (assuming they're young) can't go on the holiday by themselves.  I suppose that potentially 1 person might drop out for some reason (OH suddenly needs to be hospitalised that week and the rest of you still jolly off) and that portion only might be refunded.

As for how much deductible - that's outlined in your T&Cs.

Thanks - 2 of 3 kids are over 18 (and the other 16) if that makes a difference (?) And it would be 'all or nothing' i.e. if one person can't travel, nobody will - not sure if that affects the level of cancellation cover needed?

Limits are per person in most cases, in a minority of cases under 16s may only have 50% of the limit, just check the policy book before buying!

But the OP is asking do they need a policy with a £5k or £1k cap given there are 5 travellers. With most policies a £1k cap is fine because its a per person cap
