No rollinghome, it was a comment to the OP.  But, as an aside, I can't be absolutely sure but my original transfer limit was £5k when i opened the account, I upped that to £25k some time ago, but then recently noticed it was back to £5k and I'm fairly sure it wasn't me that adjusted it downwards. Easy to reset at £25k.   But as I say, take this with a pinch of salt.  I'm sure the seemingly random blocking can be frustrating though to say the least.

That's fairly weird, too.  I did double-check that when my payment was blocked, but the Santander goblins hadn't been fiddling with it, and it's still at £25k.
I've noticed that in some cases quite large sums can now go through online without even a 2FA code, and yet it seems they still haven't found a less problematic system for deciding when to block payments.

My experience is very similar to yours. I have 5 accounts currently, soon to go down to 3, and have 'banked' with Santander ... Abbey National for 35 years.

The problems imo started when Santander took over.

BTW I just checked my transfer limit and it was set at £5,000, strange, especially considering I made a payment of £12,000 a couple of months ago. I changed it to £25,000 (in the payments menu). I thought the payment/transfer limit was £25,000 per transaction, £100,000 in 24 hours mobile/online for all.

I was not informed of this.

    Call them.

with mine spoke with them and made 25k each time. So can send 4 times to get to the 100k limit.

I do think this is a recent change, I transferred out 2 x 10k back in feb/March my limit was 5k when I checked yesterday. Yesterday was the first time I saw this adjustable limit in the app. I checked back the last 12 months, most of my transfers are around the 2.5k, I’d only made 4 outgoing over the 5k, 2 of which were 10k mentioned above.. Anyway now I’m aware I can adjust as I see fit. It would make more sense to be emailed about these features, so you are aware rather than stumbling across them.

If you want to make a large Faster Payment, I suggest that you do every possible check and then phone them. That has worked for me, but it is sometimes necessary to talk to security. Splitting the payment up is not a good idea. That will not keep you under the radar, and it multiplies up the amount of work that you will have to do.
  • I have amended my payment and transfer amounts many times on my online account and it always returns to £500. Therefore as far as I am concerned I know what Santander says online , however it is not accurate.
Today I phoned Santander and asked if they would send £10.000 to the Yorkshire Building Society as I wanted to set up a savings account and the system refused to let me  transfer the money myself. I was taken aback when I was told NO  we will not give you access to your own money unless you set up Voice Recognition on your account. I told the operator No thank you very much . However it made no difference what so ever ~ if I refused to comply the money would not be transferred. In the past the operators have transferred money for me , but this particular operator refused point blank. He did not even ask any security questions he just kept telling me the request was not negotiable. I eventually hung up on said operator as it was a waste of my energy endlessly repeating that this was my money and I did not understand why he would not transfer it , especially as I could tell him anything he wanted to ask about the bank account.
I can assured you that I felt very anxious and fearful for the future after that phone call ~

You serm to be making life unnecessarily difficult for yourself. If you enrol for voice ID, not only will it be much easier and faster for you to use telephone banking - it will also make it next to impossible for a fraudster to ring up and pretend to be you.

Though you shouldn’t need telephone banking for making a £10k payment. I am not sure why you cannot change your default payment limit. I have long changed mine to £25k and regularly make app/online payments up to this amount, sometimes more than once a day. Did you follow the Santander Manage Payment Limit guide?

As an aside, the phone call you mention , like any other phone call you make to a bank, got recorded.

No need to feel anxious just comply with voice id.
If you dont your next post will Santander have blocked my account what can I do.
The answer to that is nothing.

First direct have used it for 7 years.
I have not had any issues, makes me feel safe.
I think its better than giving your name, address, password over every time you speak to them.
The other option is to keep your money under the bed.
